The material below is primarily material
prepared for Bible classes, mostly for adults, but some for high school
classes and some for middle school classes. The attempt has always been to
discern what God's will is, not to justify man's will. But the attempt has
been made by a fallible man. Each one of us will give account before our
Creator, and will be judged by his word, not by the comments made or
conclusions drawn in the lessons linked below. Let these lessons and notes
provoke you to deeper study of God's word, but let God's word be the end
of the matter. |

9 This is an MS Word document. It is a
cleaned up version of class notes I took as a college student sitting at Phil
Roberts' feet. However, if flaws are found, they are not to be attributed to
him. I occasionally inserted editorial comments, and now this long afterwards,
it is difficult even for me to know which comments and asides represent his
remarks and which few may have been insertions of my own. We spent 6 class
periods on this particular chapter, beginning on Oct. 20, 1978 and continuing
till Nov. 1, 1978.

More than just notes, this is a comprehensive study of the
passage, the historical context, modern interpretations, and textual issues.
Originally published in 1989 as chapter 5 in Is It Lawful?, edited by
Dennis G. Allan and Gary Fisher, this work has been revised for publication on
the Internet. Much useful material in the endnotes is now more readily
accessible. The text and endnotes are linked in both directions to allow the
reader to easily move back and forth. Also, a previously unpublished
supplement is now available.

The following article, written by J. W. McGarvey, appeared
in Lard's Quarterly in 1868 and was signed simply "M." It is made available
here because it is particularly needed and timely. It ought to be read by
every Christian who supposes modern wars can be justified by an appeal to the
Old Testament. It is reproduced here in a manner intended to appoximate the
page layout as originally printed.
